Agricultural Research Station, Sankeshwar (UAS, Dharwad)

About the Centre

The Agricultural Research Station, Sankeshwar is located in Zone – 8 (North Transitional Zone), region – IV of Karnataka receives 850 mm annual average rainfall. It is three kilometers away from Sankeshwar town towards Belagavi on National Highway 4 and opposite to Sri. Hiranyakeshi Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane Niyamit, Sankeshwar. Its Latitude: 16.14N, Longitude: 74.30E and Altitude: 698 m.

The center and the agroclimatic zone is suitable for sugarcane cultivation. Though considerable area (40%) experience moisture stress during March to May, the crop productivity is good (90 t/ha). The sugar recovery is excellent (> 11.5% average) in the state on account of wide spread adoption of high sugar varieties viz., CoC 671, SNK 09211, Co 86032, SNK 09227, SNK 07680, SNK 09293 and favourable winter season (warm days with bright sunshine and cool dry nights) coincides with major crushing season. The environment is highly flower inductive restricting sugarcane productivity, crushing season and fodder (cane tops) availability. The flowering intensity is increasing considerably in recent seasons on account of favourable photo period during flowering induction (July - August) and current climate change scenario (Extreme rainfall). This has also enhanced natural seed setting especially in the seasons where centre receives NE monsoon rains during November-December months. Hence, centre could able to effect sugarcane crosses at ARS, Sankeshwar/Mugad to supplement the centralised hybridization programme at NHG, SBI, Coimbatore. The centre and area is suitable for visit during September to January.
