About PME Unit

ICAR-IISR, Lucknow was established with the Vision of “An efficient, globally competitive and vibrant sugarcane agriculture” and mission of “Enhancement of sugarcane production, productivity, profitability and sustainability to meet future sugar and energy requirement of India”. The Institute has been working with the mandate of Basic, strategic and adaptive research on production and protection in sugarcane and breeding for sub-tropical regions of the country; Coordination and monitoring of applied research on national and regional issues to develop improved varieties and technology and Dissemination of technologies and capacity building. At present, the Institute has been working towards the upliftment of cane agriculture in India in terms of quality, productivity, management practices and various policy issues with five full-fledged Divisions (Division of Crop Improvement, Crop Production, Crop Protection, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry and Agricultural Engineering) and few Sections/Units (PME Cell, AKMU, Extension and Training, Library, Farm Management). The Institute also houses the Coordination Cell of AICRP on Sugarcane and two Krishi Vigyan Kendras (one each at Lucknow and Lakhimpur Kheri) to coordinate dissemination of technologies to farmers. IISR has a regional centre at Motipur (Bihar) which is involved in breeder seed production and screening of sugarcane germplasm for red rot and waterlogging tolerance. In addition, the Institute has a Divisional Centre on Bio-Control at Pravaranagar (Maharashtra) and a Sugarbeet Breeding Outpost at Mukteswar (Uttarakhand).

A need was felt for coordinating various activities with different Divisions/Sections. For this, a Technical Cell was created with a Scientist and few technical personnel. This unit monitors the progress of research projects, maintains research proejcts, maintains research project files and prepares periodical reports for submission to the Council. It helps in consultancy and advisory matters related to improvement in productivity of sugarcane and sugar. It also compiles the research achievements of the Institute and attends to various queries on sugarcane research received from other Institutes. It has been entrusted with the responsibility of preparing and printing Annual Report, IISR Newsletter, Technical Bulletins and Brochures. During its journey, the nomenclature of the Technical Cell was changed with Research, Coordination and Management (RCM) Unit. As per the ICAR Office Order No. 30(8)/2010/PME Cells/NAIP/O&M dated December 27, 2011, the PME (Priority Setting, Monitoring and Evaluation) Cell was created at the Institute on January 11, 2012. PME Cell works as an important chain in disseminating research and other activities of the Institute to the Council, Government and Non-Government Organizations. The PME Cell is the mirror which reflects the development of the Institute by coordinating internal and external activities.
